San Pedro Town, the heart of Ambergris Caye is located on the South end of the island. This island is said to have been the inspiration of the hit song “La Isla Bonita” by world famous singer and composer Madonna. Ambergris Caye is the largest island of Belize with its 27 square miles in length; it is home to more than 16,000 residents. Local residents are often referred to as San pedranos, derived from the name of the town, San Pedro. Belize, consisting of the many islands and the main island of San Pedro, was once colonized by the British. With this British rule, Belize became the only English speaking country in Central America. San pedranos and Belizeans are very affluent in English and have a good grasp of the Spanish language. With the mixtures of cultures, Mestizos, Creoles, Garinagus, Mennonites, Maya, East Indian and more, this makes San Pedro a melting pot of cultures. Being a dialect of English, Creole is one of the main languages spoken amongst locals.
